Piet Mondrian-inspired Hearts

Lesson Title:  Piet Mondrian-inspired Hearts
Length of Class: 3 days minimum.
Length of Lesson: 55 minutes
Grade: 1st Grade

Objective: Students will be introduced to Piet Mondrian, who is famous for his abstract artwork. Students will create their own grid, and put a heart in it. Then, paint different  boxes with primary and/or secondary colors.

Standards: Use art vocabulary to describe choices while creating art.

Materials: 
  • 9x12 copy paper
  • 9x12 sketch paper
  • 9x12 construction paper
  • Pencils
  • Crayons
  • Black Sharpies
  • Rulers
  • Paint
  • Paintbrushes
  • Watercups

Directions: 
Day 1: Students will watch a read aloud called Coppernickel goes Mondrian: https://youtu.be/DZI1j75mWYk
Students will then have a guided group discussion about Piet Mondrian’s artwork from a slideshow.
Students will watch an demonstration on how to use rulers.They will also review what patterns are.

Day 2: Students will review what they learned from last class. Next, students will watch a demonstration about primary, secondary colors, and how to mix  paint colors properly. Students will experiment with paint mixing and using the proper paint technique.

Day 3-4: Students will start and finish their final artwork. When the class is done, they will have a group discussion about the project as the exit ticket. Students will cut out their heart and glue on a colored construction paper.

Assessment & Goals: The students will make their own Mondrian-styled heart with straight lines and primary and/or secondary colors. Students will be graded on participation, effort, and following directions.
