Lesson Title: Northwest Pacific Formline-inspired Art
Length of Class: 3 days minimum.
Length of Lesson: 40 minutes
Grade: 6th Grade
Objective: Students will learn about the Pacific Northwest indigenous history and their formline art. Students will use it as an inspiration for their art, emphasizing the shared elements. Students will learn the about the deisgn principles of unity and reptitation.
Standards:
VA:Cr2.1.6 Demonstrate openness in trying new ideas, materials, methods, and approaches in making works of art and design.

DAY ONE: Introduction
Students will watch two videos:
o Northwest Coast Formline Design: the Ovoid

o Inside the Collections: Pacific Northwest Coast Peoples

Students will sketch their ideas for their final artwork using white sketch paper, rulers, and pencils. Emphasis will be placed on inspiration, and the difference between that and directly copying.
DAY TWO: Practice
Students will continue to practice figuring out their final artwork design. The teacher will introduce the art principle of unity, pattern, and repetition.
Students will watch one video:

DAY THREE: Final Artwork
Students will choose one of their sketch designs, and copy it onto mixed-media paper using a pencil.
They then will paint using tempera paint, paintbrushes, paint palettes, and water cups.
When done with their final artwork, students will work in groups to complete a worksheet as an exit ticket.
Note: my teacher example (below) was left unfinished on purpose for this lesson as I used it in my demostrations.
